On October 14, the FDA announced that Inmazeb which is a mixture of lab antibodies which were developed by Regeneron (a pharmaceutical company) could be used to effectively treat pediatric and adult patients who have ebola.  This is a huge development because the Ebola virus can cause many severe illnesses such as vomiting, bleeding, and diarrhea.  Before this development, people could only get therapy to try and replace the lost fluids.  The Inmazeb drug has three different antibodies which were designed to mimic the ones that are produced naturally during an immune response.  One of the antibodies essentially blocks the Ebola virus from entering human cells and the other two find immune cells to help clear out the virus and the already infected cells.  Regeneron and the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority have announced that the company would produce Inmazeb for the national stockpile for the next six years.

  17. I think that this treatment is necessary for more third-world countries because of their lack of medical resources, so I don't think it would effect Americans too much (especially considering we're in the midst of a global pandemic of a differing virus). I think that with this surplus of treatment, the Ebola virus will no longer be a reoccurring issue in the future. -Kendall Dees
