Coral reefs are under great distress as of late due to climate change warming the ocean as well as farming chemicals getting in the water. As the ocean warms, the coral tries to stay alive by becoming brightly colored and although that appears to be beautiful, it actually is the last stage of their life before the coral dies completely. Coral and algae live together as the algae lives on the coral. When the oceans temperature rises, the algae is pushed off of the coral and the coral is then vulnerable and breaks down. Before breaking down they become brightly colored to try to get the algae to return as well as to try to block some of the light out that the algae used to cover for the coral. Coral reefs are so important as they house the most marine wildlife out of any other environment underwater. Fertilizer gets in the water as well which causes the bleaching of coral. When the coral is white, it is dead, when it is colorful it still has a chance to recover. To help the reefs recover, preventing the farming chemicals from entering the water and reducing climate control is the only way to save the reefs. To further show the urgency of the situation, just in 2017 half of the Great Barrier Reef died off.

  3. Humans impact coral reefs because we have a huge impact on climate change and the warming of the ocean which directly impacts the coral reefs. Coral reefs are important because they house most marine wildlife. I think we could find a way to stop the fertilizer getting into the water which would help stop the bleaching of the coral.-Kevin Gu

Coral reefs are very important because they house the most marine life out of any other any other environment underwater.
