White dwarf stars are essentially the stripped core of dead stars. After studying this star, scientists have discovered that as they gain mass, they shrink in size.

White dwarf stars contain this exotic material called degenerate exotic gas which is a main reason for these counterintuitive effects. Recognizing this material will help scientists determine whether or not a star will become a white dwarf.

It’s very important to watch the growth of these stars because they could get too compacted, which will cause it to explode. Obviously, a star that has exploded is not good for the solar system.

3 Questions:

  1. What are some objects that you can think of that are super small and dense?

  2. What do you think would happen if one of these stars were to explode?

  3. Do you think you would want to see one in real life?

Comments

  1. I would not want to see one in real life, as I've never been especially interested in stars, and I feel like being close enough to see one would be bad for my health.

  2. I think there could be some drastic effects to our solar system if one of the white dwarf stars were to explode. I think I would want to see one in real life, but at a very safe distance.

  3. I think that it would be dangerous if it were to explode because if it keeps getting denser maybe the explosion would be massive. I would want to see one but probably not be near it.

  4. I would love to see one in real life, because dwarf stars seem really cool to look at, the big ones kinda creep me out mainly because they explode, and I don't wanna be around when that happens. I think white dwarf stars are cool. - Steven Solomon

  5. I would not want to see one in real life. If a white dwarf were to explode, anyone close to this would be dead. Discovering the cycle of a star is important for astronomers to know but no one should want to be close. The explosion would have a massive radius so any planet close enough to the white star would also be destroyed.

  6. I think it would be very dangerous for one of these starts to explode because of how dense the star is and all that energy would cause a huge explosion.

  7. I think it would be really cool to see one, but it's not good for our solar system and it would probably would be bad for our health.

  8. I would not want to be close to one as if it exploded it would kill me and anything around me. It would be very pretty but not worth it if it meant dying. Small and dense items are weights and lead. Sarah LaChance

  9. I think that if the star were to explode that it could potentially damage other planets and solar systems near it. I would want to see on in real life from a safe distance.

  10. When these stars explode they spread there energetic flames through the solar system and scorch any nearby planets or items around them. this will eventually happen to all starts in existence

  11. I would want to see one in real life because I think it is important to see everything once. It is amazing that this could happen anyways, so why not take the chance to see it. A big exploration could cause harm to earth and other plants. Or it could create a new element since all the things create on earth come from stars.

  13. one object that comes to mind right away when i think of denseness is ice cubes because the density can change depending on the state of matter they are in. all very interesting. - Maddie Silk

  14. I think that it would be cool to see one explode but I wouldn't want to be near it. As long as all of them don't explode I think it would be cool -Dees

  16. I think that I woudn't want to see one explode because it probably do harm to our atmosphere if it's too close.

  20. Answering #3, ummm no? sounds way too dangerous for me to stomach, but i guess that depends how far away it is for me. But through a telescope, sure, that would be kinda cool. Im sure i will be disappointing by the lack of star shape, stars are just bright circles, it makes me sad

  22. I think if one of these stars exploded, it would have an huge impact on its solar system. I can imagine of such explosion occurred near our solar system it could send shock wave through it and maybe alter the gravitational pull of the planets in our solar system. It could also create meteors which could pose a threat of they hit our planet.

  24. I would not want to see a star explode because If I can see it i'm probably too close. If it were to explode it would destroy anything close to it.
