Malaria Carrying Mosquitoes are adapting quicker than we thought by Erik Ellinger

Malaria Carrying Mosquitoes are adapting quicker than we thought. Erik Ellinger

In the past few decades Malaria has been a major problem in some 3rd world countries, so the World Health Organization (WHO) decided they needed to find an insecticide to combat the mosquitos who are carrying Malaria. Two years ago WHO started to release clothianidin, an insecticide, to many countries. However, a study done recently showed that in a certain type of mosquito the insecticide wasn’t completely effective in killing them. Many scientists have said that this is the first clear sign of a resistance to clothianidin which if not dealt with soon, the resistance can spread and make the insecticide useless in a few years. Scientist Tiaan de Jager, says “the study shows it is crucial to test malaria vectors for resistance to an insecticide before deploying it.”  This shows the importance of testing the insecticide before it is released thoroughly if WHO wants to stop the spread of Malaria in third world countries.

Do you think that the WHO can ever develop a successful insecticide?

Does this case give any insight into how animals develop resistances?

Why do you think Malaria is such a major problem in third world countries?

Comments

  1. 1. I don't think WHO can do it. They aren't in the business of insecticides.
    2. The ones that survive pass on their genes to their children.
    3. It is such a major issue because they have less healthcare and are more poor.

  2. I think it will take WHO a while to develop an effective insecticide because there is so much going on in the world. They already have medicine to try and prevent people from getting malaria so they know what works for some people. With time, they will be able to develop an effective vaccine that truly works for the majority of the population.

  3. I think that WHO can develop a successful insecticide, but the mosquitoes could continue to develop a resistance to the insecticide. I think Malaria is a major problem in third world countries because they do not have the technology/resources to be able to combat the disease effectively. -Kevin Gu

  4. I think Malaria is such a major problem in third world countries because they don't have more advanced healthcare as we do.

  5. Malaria is such a problem in third world countries because they have worse healthcare and also have less money as a whole. There is also the problem of under educating people of how to stay safe from diseases.Sarah LaChance

  6. Malaria is such a major problem in third world countries because those countries have no access to the medical advances that we have developed to prevent malaria and third world countries are not able to create medicine to avoid malaria, so unless they receive outside help, malaria will have a large negative impact on their population.

  7. I think eventually WHO will develop a successful insecticide, I don't know when it would be, because it seems like they need to do a lot of test before they can fully understand the effects of the pesticide, and how it won't just effect mosquitoes but other insects or even other animals. - Steven Solomon

  8. I think that the WHO will probably be able to develop an insecticide but it might take a long time. This case just shows that there are some animals out there that will be resistant to certain vaccinations and it's important to know that so we can learn from it. -Campbell Marino

  9. i think that malaria is a major problem because a lot of people are getting it by mosquitoes

  10. I think the WHO will be able to develop a successful insecticide, I dont think it will be soon though. They have to do a lot more tests and need a better understanding of whats happening and how to fix it. Lannah Parker

  11. I don't think that WHO will ever develop a successful insecticide because mosquitoes will always be able to adapt. This case does show insight on how animals develop resistances because it shows that mosquitoes who have been exposed to an insecticide in the past and been killed by it are no longer being killed by it so obviously the mosquitoes have found a way to become resistant to it. -Joe Panthalani

  12. Malaria is a problem for third world countries because they don't have the money and they don't have a good healthcare .

  13. I think Malaria is such a problem in third world countries because they don't have as much health care and good diagnostic doctors as there are here.

  14. I think the WHO could be able at some point come up with a successful insecticide but it takes a lot of money, time, and new technology for that to happen. It will help a lot of people if they are able to come up with a insecticide. I think it is such a problem in the third world countries is because they do not have the best health care, plus the doctors in those areas are not the best as here.

  15. Malaria is a bigger issue in third world countries because they don't have the technology or resources to eliminate harmful diseases. I think that if third world countries had more resources they wouldn't have such issues. - kendall d

  16. Mosquito growth isn't so much the problem compared to the lack of a proper vaccine in 3rd world countries. a proper vaccine would vastly combat against a vast malaria outbreak.

  21. I think malaria is a problem in 3rd world countries because they dont have clean water supplies and they have poor sanitation. without clean water to use for sanitation purposes insects feed on feces and waste products and spread bacteria and diseases. also without fresh water people are forced to drink unsafe water that can make them sick.

  22. WHO does have the ability to make a successful insecticide but it needs to be studied and tried to make sure there are no problems with it. It is a major problem because they do not have access to certain medicines or living conditions that other parts of the world have. -Erik E
