With carbon dioxide increasing in the atmosphere the water is going to absorb it and form carbonic acid when it reacts with seawater. The increasing acidity causes the denticles on the sharks skin (Toothlike protrusions on the shark.) The injury to the skin of the shark can cause infection. If humans continue to harm the environment like we are the pH of the ocean will drop from 8.1 to 7.3 by 2300. Ocean Acidity also affects other animals like clams and coral.

Why Do you think the degradation of the sharks skin will harm them in the future?

What Can we do to stop this from happening?

If Carbonic Acid can cause degradation in dentin why haven’t we heard of this before?

  1. To stop the acidification of the oceans we could reduce our carbon footprint by using alternative transportation rather than gas powered vehicles which harm the environment more than other transportation.

    1. I agree with this, walking biking or using public transportation can most defiantly decrease our carbon dioxide footprint. Another thing we could do is to use less electricity and water in your house

  2. I believe that we haven’t hear about this because of societies negative outlook on sharks. This is due to movies like jaws and general public fear. People just don’t care because we are scared of them.

  3. Yes it will hurt the shark skins and they’ll be more open to getting an infection. Use less fossil fuels can help to stop it. We haven’t heard of it as much because people don’t care as much about sharks then other animals. -gabby Abowitz

  4. I wonder if sharks could adapt to the conditions like they have done in the past with upgrading their teeth and gills to help them adapt to the environment.

  5. I think we haven't heard of this as of late is because it isn't a very important issue. There are most likely countless of other far more important things that people are and should be concerned about. We have not heard about this yet because it isn't bad enough to catch the attention of the majority of the population yet.

  6. I think that the sharks skin being weakened is not that important to the hole of the ocean but i see its importance. I think that the green houses gasses emitted by us will not slow down very much anytime soon so i expect this to get worse.

  7. I feel like this is a major problem with our oceanic life. This issue could possibly lead to animals going instinct and can possibly hurt us human when we eat fish or go swimming

  8. This is definitely an issue for sharks, and can cause problems for them, and other ocean animals in the future. We can stop this by creating a smaller carbon footprint.

  9. I think if the sharks are greatly affected by this there could be a dip in population and that would then cause the entire ocean ecosystem to shift and it may cause an increase in population of the things they sharks eat because sharks wouldn’t be there to eat them. -elena appel

  10. This is a huge issue for sharks and is bound to cause a ripple effect in the food chain and might even effect us

  11. it can effect also otther animals and their food -giorgia

  12. Another way of combating ocean acidification would be to plant more trees, add more alkali to the ocean, and the adding of limestone carbonate material would all improve ocean life as well as ours
