In this article they talk about how caves that have fresh water in them are expanding, this could be due to many different things, such as slightly acidic snow or rain and limestone that is a very soluble type of rock. However, when researchers were measuring the cave, the supplies they were using could not reach the bottom of the cave, therefore they could not fully understand how deep and big the cave actually is. They also point out that the amount of water in the cave is not increasing just the space in it.

What are the long term effects?

Why is this important?

Is this bad for the earth?

Comments

  1. Long term effects that can happen from this is that the caves can become bigger and bigger, causing the water to go farther underground as the cave goes farther into the earth. - Steven Solomon

  2. 1. The long term effects would mostly be on cave ecosystems as their habitat expands.
    2. This is important because this is theorized to be caused by polluted acid rain.
    3. I don't think the expansion of caves is bad for the earth.

  3. I think overtime that this could be a problem. Acidic rain is obviously not ideal for the environment and erosion is not good either. -Campbell Marino

  4. I don't think that this is bad for the earth due to this being a natural process constantly occurring and the earth is billions of years old.

  5. I think the long term effects of this would be that the caves could continue to become deeper which could uproot the ecosystem living in the caves. I think that the expansion is not necessarily bad for the earth. -Kevin Gu

  6. I think the long term effects would be polluted water, and the caves become bigger and bigger, causing the water to go farther underground.

  7. Long term effects of this is flooding underground which could be detrimental for animals that live underground like bats and moles. This is bad for the earth because if this continues it could destroy entire ecosystems. -Joe Panthalani

  8. I think this could be a bad thing moving further because this is dangerous for animals that live in bats, but not in water. They could lose their niche which could cause many problems. Another problem is underground flooding because this hurt the cave and animals.

  9. i think this could be good for the earth because it is fresh water and people do be getting stuck in caves so i thing it just what the earth is doing i think it is natural.

  10. the expansion of the caves could mean many things. This means that the cave could develop its own complete ecosystem and have storms and seasons. which is really cool and fascinating. but that also means if the area is not very stable it could collapse and affect the greater area. this means huge hole in the ground, buildings collapsing and many lives lost if we were unaware of the situation. but having a larger area is probably better overall because humans are not living in that specific environment so the animals could live peacefully.

  11. I think that long term effects that can happen is that the caves get deeper and deeper, so the water gets deeper and deeper into the earth which can mess up the ecosystems existing in the caves already.

  12. 1. It could lead to bigger caves
    2. More bio diversity
    3. No I don't think it is

  13. The water can affect the structure of the cave and expand into the earth deeper. I think this could be bad because some structures could be built over caves and this will cause the foundations to be messed up. -Erik E

  14. It could lead to the environment of the cave changing -sophia h

  15. Could it also mean that the freshwater could be eroding the cave making it deeper.

  16. I think long term it could become a bigger problem because acidic water isn't good for the environment and could lead to bigger problems. -Lannah Parker

  17. This could be pretty bad for the earth considering this could collapse land too which would result in maybe damage to homes or landmarks

  18. answering question 3, no, i don't think the cave being deeper is bad, however, the divers who risk their lives to explore the caves could be bad.

  19. I think overtime the cave getting deeper will effect the surrounding-Caleb

  20. I think that this will negatively impact the Earth because the expansion of caves will effect erosion in areas surrounding. A rise in erosion could cause buildings to collapse, and especially around radioactive sites or areas with high amount of carbon underground, the long term effects could significantly impact our Earth. -Kendall Dees
