Bug Experts Dismiss Worry About US 'Murder Hornets' as Hype
Colin McQueen
There is a species of Japanese hornets coloquially referred to as Murder Hornets. These hornets are very large and their sting is ‘heavier duty’ in terms of pain and potency than other hornets. So called “Murder Hornets” are, by and by large, not dangerous for humans, despite their dreadful reputation. Bug experts state that they are only deadly towards bees, especially American bees as they do not have the natural abilities Japanese bees do to protect themselves, such as carpeting the hornets and overheating them to death, which could be a disaster for our already dwindling bee populations. However, there is minimal evidence that the hornets have a breeding population in North America, meaning a large amount of the fear over them as valid, but unneeded.

I believe that the hysteria comes from their frightening appearance and a fear that they could establish a breeding population. If they could establish a breeding population in North America, it could be devastating to our bee population. However, there is minimal evidence they have enough of a population to breed in North America.

ReplyDeleteI think the name Murder Hornet just came from media trying to get people to see their headlines, however scientist have proved they are unlikely to kill unless swarmed. They also could have possibly hitched a ride on cargo ships coming from across the Pacific from Asia.
