Blue Zones are places around the world where the average lifetime is exceptionally higher than normal. After studying these five locations (Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Ogliastra Region, Sardinia; Loma Linda, California; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica) scientists came up with nine lifestyle factors that were the same in all of these places. Books have since been published encouraging people to follow this lifestyle to live a longer, happier life. 

The nine lessons that scientists have learned from these areas are - move naturally, purpose, downshift, 80 percent rule, plant slant, wine at five, right tribe, community, and loved ones first. What’s interesting about these nine things is that they’re simply. Many centenarians didn’t pursue longevity, they lived their lives to the fullest and “forgot to die along the way”().  

Extreme diets and exercise don’t last but within these communities people found a way to live their life between the two extremes.

  2. I think that genetics do have a bit of a factor in longevity, but it seems like it's more based on how you live your lifestyle and the things you do. I don't know anyone who has lived to be 100, but pretty close. -Campbell Marino

  3. This was really interesting. I think genetics is a factor but mindset and your environment changes your health drastically. It would be really interesting to see how much our country would change if we were to incorporate these nine lessons.

  4. I think that some of the communities' longevity is based on their ancestors/genetics, but there could also be some other factors. I think it would be difficult, at first, to incorporate the nine lifestyle factors into our adult lives, but could become easier as we get used to it if we choose to. I do not know anyone who has lived to be 100 years old.

  5. I think that these communities' longevity is more based on the lifestyle that they live than their genetics. I think incorporating these lifestyle factors might be difficult to adjust to at first but they would be fine after you get used to it. I don't know anyone who has lived to be 100. -Joe Panthalani

  6. I think it's interesting that 5 different places that have a longer average life span developed around the world and happened to have very similar lifestyles that contributed to a longer life. I always used to think that life spans were primarily based on genetics, but it was surprising to find out that genetics contribute to only 20% of how long you live.

  8. I think it would be absolutely incredible to be able to live naturally! I would love nothing more than to live in a cabin with the people that I love and get my food from hunting and gathering. No technology and no connections to what is going on in the world around me would be spectacular. I know one person that lived to be close to 100, and she never smoked and occasionally drank and was the most loving woman until her final years. -Kendall Dees

  9. I think that having blue zones in the world is every interesting. These people do not try to live longer however they do which is so weird. I do not know anyone that has lived to be 100, I have had family members that have lived to be really high 90s. Genetics, in my opinion, do play a large part because breast cancer can run in families and can test for it. Disease like that do play a role in longevity in ones life.

  12. I have never known anyone personally that has made it to 100 years old, but I know people that do. I think it would be hard for me to incorporate the diet mainly because im lazy and its easier to be unhealthy. I think that this was really interesting and I didnt know about blue zones before.

  13. I had a friend whos Grandma lived to 104 years old and when we would ask her how she lived so long she would say "because I go with the flow" and this shows how her lifestyle of not stressing and "going with the flow" helped her live longer.

  14. This Really shows info to us on how simply keeping a good mind set and eating healthy with balanced exercise drastically increases life spans of those who do those things. if others follow this population may not fluctuate as much

  19. My grandfather lived to 94, close enough right? He died a while back. In terms of incorporate their lifestyle into mine, id say would be rather difficult. Im very bad a schedules and routines and that will be the reason i wont live to 120. I think genetics play a good role when it comes to their health. If you are super healthy and take care of yourself, i would have to assume your offspring would have better genetics that the people who didnt take so good care of themselves
