A Wobble, Luck and Preparation Lessened Laura’s Devastation

Hurricane Laura did not cause nearly as much damage as was expected. There were two reasons for this. The first is that before the Hurricane hit Louisiana the hurricane shifted 15 miles so that the worst of the storm surge hit a far less populated area than the initial target, Lake Charles. This meant that the damage sustained wasn’t terrible in the town, but the sheer size of the hurricane meant that it still caused major damage to houses along the coast.
The second reason that Laura didn’t cause too severe of damage was because of the quick initiative of the public to evacuate. Due to hurricanes in the past and the pandemic which could have made people “more attentive to risk” , people understood the danger of staying so most made it out safely.
Overall because of a little luck and quick thinking by the officials, Hurricane Laura wasn’t able to become a catastrophe.
What is the worst storm that you have heard of?
Would you live in places like this if you knew there was a risk of storms this big happening?
Do you think that storms like this are happening more frequently recently?
The worst storm that I have heard of was Hurricane Katrina. I would probably not live in the areas that have a high risk of storms happening. -Kevin Gu
ReplyDeleteMaria is the worst storm that I have heard
ReplyDeleteI would probably not live in a place like this because they storms have been getting significantly worse and occur more frequently. If I moved their, I would have to leave my home frequently or I would have to move to a different area. There are places you can move to that are close to the beach that are not threatened by hurricanes so much.
ReplyDeleteI would not live in a place that has a high chance to receive major damage from storms. The risk doesn't outweigh the reward.

The worst storm that I have heard of was most likely Hurricane Katrina. It had a lot of media coverage which is mostly why it is well known, but it was a terrible hurricane. I would never live in a high risk area for things like this. sarah lachance

ReplyDeleteThe worst I've heard of was Katrina because I knew people affected by it. I wouldn't buy a house in an area that has hurricanes at all. I think that they are getting more frequent but they aren't as extreme. -Erik E

ReplyDeleteI think the worst could be the one that hit Puerto Rico because it hit the whole island. The island also loss power for a long time, had tons of damage, plus it is hard to get supply to an island versus Katrina for Louisiana.

ReplyDeleteThe worst storm I have heard of was the Tornado in Joplin because it leveled the area. No i would not live in these areas knowing the type of storms are there because I wouldn't want my home destroyed. Yes because of climate change there is more warm water for storms like this to keep happening more.

ReplyDeleteHurricane Katrina is the worst storm that I have heard of. I would not live in a place like this if I knew there was a constant risk of a storm. I do think that storms like this are happening more frequently due to things like jet streams which are moving storms that would normally just be over the ocean into the land. -Joe Panthalani
ReplyDeleteAnswering question 2, if i knew an area i lived in happened to be prone to disasters, no, i would not decide to keep living there. While i would be concerned for my safety, id also consider my options, financially. Could I afford to move? Will I be able to get another stable job? Is moving even worth the risk of starting all over again? So yeah, its not as cut and dry as it might seem from the outside looking in im guessing
