Ocean acidification could degrade sharks’ tough skin part 2 by Victoria Ocaña

Ocean acidification could degrade sharks’ tough skin

The acid from the seas and oceans is increasing with about 2300 levels of acid. Corrosion had frayed the edges of many denticles making them more invulnerable to infections.

This is happening because humans are burning fossils and emit CO2 to the atmosphere which is being absorbed by the water and increasing the Ph of the ocean.

Is it only in sharks or also in other animals?

How can we stop burning fossil fuels so we can save the sharks?

How does it affect us?

  1. Because of the PH in the ocean is going down it is effects all life.

This could affect us because it can mess up our food chain. The fish would die off and then people who love eating fish won’t have fish to eat anymore.

This could affect us humans because it can make a whole new food chain. Fishing and other jobs might be affect as well. And shark week won’t be a thing anymore

  4. Any animal that has salt in their shells or skin is going to be more effected by the acid in the ocean. This weakens their shells or scales allowing infections to enter their bodies that could also effect humans the might eat the infected fish.

This could affect other animals too and then we could potentially lose a lot of animals in the ocean which would screw up the ecosystem.

  6. If the sharks get sick easier it might be easier for old or possibly new sicknesses to spread farther around the ocean's ecosystem, and maybe even affect us through us eating sick animals, I think more attention needs to be put on our treatment of the ocean.

  7. To stop this from becoming an even bigger issue we could start using alternative transportation and walking to places if they're close. This could be very effective for a lot of things in the long run. -Izzy

  8. This also affects other animals. Any animal that has salt in their shell would also be affected by this. Driving less would have a significant impact on our consumption of fossil fuels. As well as an overall reduction in manufacturing.

  9. One way that we can reduce the burning of fossil fuels is to put restrictions on what and how much chemicals factories can emit into the air.

  11. To combat ocean acidification requires lowering carbon dioxide emissions and in turn improving the health of the ocean one way we can do this is by creating marine protected areas and stopping destructive fishing practices
