The Ocean Cleanup Machine Returns With it’s First Batch of Trash From the Ocean

The Ocean Cleanup is a nonprofit organization that develops advanced technologies to get rid of the ocean’s plastic. After months of trial and error, a special machine created by the Ocean Cleanup returned from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with tons of trash collected from the ocean. From plastic bags, fishing nets, and miscellaneous trash, the 2,000 foot long floating tube that skims the surface of the ocean water has proven to be effective. The goal of the Ocean Cleanup team is to clean up 50% of the ocean’s trash in 5 years.

Do you think that their goal is realistic? Why or why not?

How does the trash affect life in the ocean?

Where does all the trash in the ocean come from? How do you think we can prevent it?

  1. I believe that a way we can prevent people from continuing to dump trash in the oceans is increasing the punishment for doing it. This would make people think twice about throwing their trash.

  2. I think this goal is pretty realistic its just that the only way to stop a problem is to stop where the problem comes from and the problem comes from the people around the world polluting the water. What is being cleaned up is being put back into the water

  3. I absolutely don’t think their goal is realistic but it’s a great cause and eventually maybe they’ll get there but not in the time that they hope.

  4. I think this is something more people should be doing to clean up the ocean, if done at a larger scale, then this could help out a ton.

  5. Trash affects life in the ocean by killing many sea animals. Whether it be through choking or infection this trash can get caught up with the sea life which confuses them and causes them to die.

The trash affects then animals in the ocean by killing them off and making them sick. When an animal swallows trash it can either make them sick or kill them because of them not being able to digest what’s being swallowed.

  7. I do not think that there goal is realistic because from what it seems there machine only collects trash on the surface and there is a lot of trash below the surface. The ocean is also so vast that cleaning half of the waste would be very difficult. Lastly more trash would be added to the ocean while they are cleaning it minimizing their efforts.

    1. I completely agree that their goal is not realistic. It seems crazy that they think one machine can get that much trash out of the ocean in such a little amount of time.

  8. I think that the idea of the ocean clean up “machine” is very good because there is too much trash and plastic in our oceans. However, I think they need more than just one to reach their goal because there is too much plastic to cover with just one. Maybe they could have rules that states with beaches and oceans have to use their machine to clean up.

  9. Unless there are multiple of these craft, then the goal seems much too unrealistic. The ocean is just too vast and with trash being put in the ocean constantly, as soon as the tube cleaned the ocean, it would just be filled with trash again.

  10. trash effects many animals in the sea because it take up room, some of them eat it and starve cause its not giving them nutrients, things like soda can plastic can get stuck on fish and choke them.

  11. There's just too much trash in the ocean for them to clean up 50% in 5 years. I think they should focus on certain spots to clan first and work on rehabilitating those areas.

  12. the goal to clean up all of the trash and garbage in the ocean is unrealistic to me because their is just so much ocean we dont even know about and their is also an absurd amount of trash in the ocean so it would be very hard.

  13. I think that focusing on certain spots that are heavily polluted would be a much faster and efficient way to solve this problem. I also think increased punishment for littering should be put into effect.

  14. I think this is a really interesting idea because many people would say that this is a pretty basic idea but it really isnt because you have to find a way to make sure that you are just picking up the trash and not disturbing any wildlife.

Their goal is unrealistic but what they are doing is still good. The less plastic in the ocean the better!

  16. i don't believe that this goals it is possible becouse the ocean it too large and we still don't know part of it -giorgiab

  17. I think this is a really good start to help to clean up the trash, but I also agree that it may either take too long, or not be able to clean up even the vast majority of the ocean.

  18. I think it won't fix all the issues with plastic in our oceans but it is an attempt to, and this can ultimately only help our oceans. Trash affects our oceans because animals eat it and they become sick and can die off, animals can also become trapped in plastic, especially sea turtles. -Gabby Abowitz
