The Kakapo one of New Zealand’s unique birds seems to be going almost extinct running in the numbers around 211. One of the reasons that these numbers are so low is because of the fact that these birds can’t fly as many parrots would, which makes them an easy target for prey and infections like aspergillosis which is fungi that infects the tissue.

  1. To be able to help the birds we could separate them from other wild animals and carefully control their surroundings to foster growth but we don’t want the to become human dependent.

  2. I think that a way we could possibly prevent the continuation of this is by finding the birds that do have the infection, study them, and then disinfect them and release them back into the wild. We can also stop deforestation in places that the birds are most prominent

I think a way to prevent the infection from spreading is by isolating the birds that are already infected, like we talked about in class. Another way to prevent it is by finding the cause of the infection, and eliminate it from their environment. We could also move the birds to another location.

  7. I see this issue as larger than just this animal. I had no idea this was even happening and I think the awareness of issues like this is a big problem, because not many people were/are aware of this so there isn’t as much going around to support this cause as there could be. Things like these need to be more publicly spread for them to be changed.

  8. Research would have to be done about the disease to find out how it's spread. The results of that research would best tell us how to stop the spread of the disease. In order for us to help we could donate to non profits that would help the species like the World Wildlife Fund.

  9. I think that ways we could help would be that we take them into captivity while they recover from the sickness they get. I think we should take all of them out of the habitat so it doesn’t keep spreading and then ultimately killing them all. After the disease is under control then they could be released back into the wild and hopefully repopulate. -elena appel

  10. To stop the spread of infection, birds who already infected should be put into isolation to stop the rapid increase of infection.

  11. To stop the infection, infected birds should be isolated until the exact cause of the infection is clear. If it is a disease, terminate the infected birds. If it is a fungus or environmental factor, if preserving the species is the primary objective, then move onto completely eradicating the fungus/infectious substance.
