Sea Levels Rising - by Bradley Wunderlich

The rising of sea levels is not a small topic, hence all the talk of it in recent years. The main causes of the level’s rise are melting glaciers and sheets of ice, and the water expanding as it warms. This melting of glaciers is being traced back to human activity, where more carbon dioxide is being produced and put into the atmosphere, complicating and escalating The Greenhouse Effect to warm up the earth, therefore causing more natural ice to melt.

Questions:

1: How with this affect our lives, within the next few decades? How high will sea levels be then?

2: How will these rising waters affect cities and civilizations near the coasts, or near oceans?

3: As the carbon levels only increase, how will the rate of climate change be affected, and how will this change how we are affected?

Comments

  1. The sea levels rising could effect people who live near beaches or coastal areas because of flooding. The levels rising could also effect the severity of coastal storms making them happen more inland.

  2. I think sea level rising will affect coastal areas for sure because there is scientific data that it is and it is also getting closer and closer to land. - Teagan Dunne

  3. I think that the sea level rising is awful and it could have massive negative effects to the coastline. The plants and animals have a rising threat and if they cant adapt to the harsh new conditions they will not survive. - jake m

  4. One of the main concerns of sea levels rising is the stronger storm serge. Another concern is people will no longer to build houses on some parts of the coast.

  5. The rising waters will destroy towns and homes. It would make parts of cities unlivable. This would also affect land erosion.

  6. Storm surging is something I probably should live looked into more before this presentation but that and sea level rising because of the named causes could change the world for the worse

  7. With the issue of the water rising is going to affect everyone not only the people who live by the water but the people who live inland also because when a natural disaster happens in states that are surround by water they're going to have to move inland to get away from the water

This will affect a lot of animal's habitats and people's properties. The sea level will rise and eventually destroy beach homes and the animals who live there won't be adapted to the salt water, it's too much for them. More inland properties will get the tropical storms worse.

  9. The progression of the height of the sea level over the years so far has seemed to be less exponential and more so a stable increase. Of course it isn't perfectly a straight line, but that can be expected from a graph that pertains to information such as this. This in the future, however may change in the future, considering that in in the year, 2000 AD, the height increase of sea level seems to have sped up quite significantly. If this will continue to be the trend in the future has yet to be seen, but it is safe to assume that the sea level will have a slow exponential increase over time until something is done about it.

Rising sea level can affect cities because if it gets too high, the cities can flood. This will also affect us because it can ruin our homes and it can also ruin some of our resources like grocery stores and clothing stores.

  11. Sea levels rising will cause a lot of loss of land and habitats. Many humans homes and animals homes will be destroyed and will cause them to have to find new space.

  12. The sea levels will continue to increase and we will end up having to transfer the water somewhere to get needs it such a as third world countries at are in droughts. If it rises too high it can cause flooding and water damage. I think it can also cause it to rain more frequently. -Gabby Abowitz

  13. Increasing carbon levels will cause the global temperature to grow exponentially. As glaciers melt they release carbon which contributes to the effect of climate change and simultaneously raises the sea level.

  14. This will effect our lives in the coming years because coastal cities will eventually be ruined do to rising sea levels.

  15. I think that the sea level rise will cause a lot of damage. I think that since its rising more lately then theres no where for the “new” water will go so it will go up and then it will expand out. This is harmful for the people who live right by the ocean because there house could be in danger as well as companies that are near the ocean may have issues. -elena appel

  16. I think that because of the rising sea level the people that live near a coast line will be effected because their home and the area they live in will be submerged. It will also effect the plant life which people eat as a natural resource.

  17. The people living near the coastline are the ones who should be the most worried. I think the prices of houses and property near the coast will also probably go down.

  19. Sea levels rising can effect those people who live of the coast because it can ruin the resturants and houses that are build right near shore. It also can also effect the animals living there, showing they must adapt to the increase in water or unfortunately die off.

  20. In 2019 a study projected that in a low emissions scenario (which we are not in) the water will rise 30 cm by 2050 and about 70 cm by 2100 vs a more high emissions scenario where the water will rise about 35 cm by 2050 and 111 cm by 2100 one way to combat this is if everyone attempted to reduce there carbon footprint as greenhouse gases are one of the biggest factors for sea level rise

  21. The melting glaciers and rising ocean water will most certainly have a huge impact on cities near the ocean. Some cities, such as New Orleans, is already built below sea level. The levies surrounding it will eventually give out and the city will be under water. All of the major cities on the East Coast will be impacted. Manhattan is a risk of being completely underwater by the end of this century. If hurricane Sandy a few years ago is any indication, these east coast cities are ill-prepared for the impact of rising ocean waters even for a short period.
