Red tide algae bloom kills wildlife by Meredith Jacques
https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/florida-coastline-besieged-algae-bloom/
This time last year the coastal cities in Florida were dealing with a long running red tide. Many dead aquatic life was found washed up on the beach as a result of the toxic algae bloom (267 tons!). Even a large whale shark was found dead. They recently also had issues with large amounts of blue-green algae. This is continuing to be an issue in the different parts of the US this year (search "algae bloom" or "red tide" in google news for more stories).
What do you think may cause these algae blooms?
How does this affect life in the ocean?
How are human beings and land animals impacted as a result?

Life in the ocean is affected by the blue green algae in many harmful ways. First off it suffocated and takes up a lot of room. It can also make animals that are in the ocean and on land sick and possibly die.

DeleteThe blue green algae is effecting bodies of water near us. There are numerous bad health effects and many symptoms that come with it. 3 dogs have died in the time this has happened

DeleteThis algae can impact humans and animals in many ways. These can include blue discoloration, eye watering, and drooling far dogs, and paralysis and strange behavior for humans. Since this bacteria can become airborne, it can also cause a number of respiratory problems.

Good point! I completely agree with this.
ReplyDeleteA cause of these algae blooms could be fertilizer along with the runoff. The affect of these algae blooms are very harmful and caused a lot of fish to die, which not only could potentially cause fishermen to lose money they may of been depending on, it also can mess up the food chain for the sea life. -Izzy Moss
ReplyDeleteThe blue green algae has always been apart of the underwater ecosystem but due to its increase in numbers because of run off it has become dangerous and is killing marine animals by suffocating them.

DeleteHumans and land animals are being affected by the algae blooms because of their toxicity. It has already killed 3 dogs and lots of other animals living nearby are also affected. Even humans are affected by the blue-green algae blooms and if exposed to it, can experience rashes, upset stomach, paralysis, and respiratory issues.

Based on what we learned in class not only animals are being affected by these algae blooms, humans are also getting affected because fishing is getting harder because a lot of the fish are dying. Also, tourism in the areas that are affected are losing tourists because there a dead animals showing up on the shore and people do not want to go on vacation where that is happening.

DeleteBased off of the information that we've learned in class I believe the algae bloom occurred due to fertilizer entering the runoff into the Mississippi river. The fertilizer provides nutrients for the Algae to prosper. When the runoff reaches the Gulf where the water is more stagnant, and warmer it allows the algae to grow at an exponential rate.

DeleteThe algae is a powerful toxin, It can cause neurological problems as well as liver poison in small dogs and if dogs unjust the only method of getting is out is making them throw up. In humans it can cause paralysis, respiratory problems and rashes.

Deletethis effect the life in the sea alot. 200 tons should be having a bigger affectr then it dose right now

DeleteThe algae is most likely caused by the runoff water in rivers leading to the gulf of Mexico. It effects life in the ocean because it is killing tons of animals and can even harm humans by giving them a rash or upset stomach. It also resulted in three dogs dying in Missouri.

Animals and Humans are both being effected by algae such as Cyanobacteria which can cause effects such as itchy eyes and sickness and may in the result in death. It can cause humans to get skin rashes and the algae has a smell which might cause respiratory problems.

The Aglae bloom known as "The Red Tide" has been growing exponentially. The cause of these algae blooms are nutrients from fertilizers. The way many fertilizers make their way to the algae blooms are they're pushed from fields to rivers by runoff and carried down to the Gulf of Mexico, to the bulk of the algae blooms. The Red Tide uses nitrogen and phosphorus to grow.

Blue green Algae is a disease that has been effecting animals inside bodies of water, and outside including dogs. It can grow in every body of water but its most typically found in lakes because of the warmer water. Its most commonly found thriving in the late summer and early fall. The actual algae can cause mild to serious affects on the neurological system when in contact with the deadly plant.-Adam Spizman
ReplyDeleteCyanobacteria, aka "Blue Green Algae" is highly toxic, and can be found in warmer areas, in warm slow moving or still waters. This is extremely toxic, and can kill dogs within the hour, and can cause humans either rashes, or paralysis. This is different from "Red Tide," which is caused by Phytoplankton, that produce 75% of our oxygen, but this "Red Tide" also toxic, and has killed plenty of sea creatures in its wake.

Fertilizers used on crops are being washed into waterways by rain. These fertilizers eventually end up in the Gulf of Mexico. The fertilizers are causing large toxic algae blooms which are harmful to people and animals.

ReplyDeleteBlue green algae is affecting animals by making them sick. If an animal is affected by this blue green algae, they will experience liver failure and there's noting that doctors can really do about it except make them throw up. Although making them throw up won't fix their liver failure, it still helps get the toxins of the algae out. Blue green algae can also kill off animals and could potentially make them be endangered if it keeps affecting them a lot.
the algae blooms are caused by the fertilizer run off going into the oceans and rivers. Then that is toxic to the water and aquatic life which causes a lot of fish to die and get caught in the algae. It causes negative effects on the ocean life because the fish die and then it causes the water to be unsafe due to all the dead fish - Elena Appel
ReplyDeleteThis effects ocean life the same way pollution in the air affects us. Fish and sea life who breathe in water, will breathe in the algae as well. If we breathe in substances or chemicals that our bodies can't handle, it will kill us. When the algae is swallowed up by the fish's gills, it suffocates them. - Gracey Bell
ReplyDeleteThis affects the ocean life because it causes lower oxygen levels which kills fish and algae blooms can also make humans and animals sick which affects everyone.

Deletethis algae bloom is a big problem because if the side affects are bad now just think about how long it will be until we stop using fertilizer, for all those year theirs going to be more and more run off which will counties to kill life in the sea-Drew Hanser
