Pieces of Small Plastic in the Ocean by Gracey Bell

Microplastic specs are being discovered deep in the ocean. People are worried because not only is plastic harming big animals like sea turtles they are harming particle eating sea creatures like giant larvaceans and pelagic red crabs who are at a huge risk since they don’t know the difference between what’s food and what's plastic. This will hurt others because those sea creatures get eaten. The plastic will end up harming a lot of sea animals.

Since plastic is not biodegradable, do you think that one day our oceans will be all plastic or do you think we will be able to somehow reverse our actions before it’s too late?
Do you think this could eventually affect us if we eat a fish or crustacean who has been contaminated with plastic?
What is something that could help encourage the use of recycling and switching out plastic for something else?
I think that the damage has been done. There will always be plastic in our oceans but I think that we will be able to find good alternatives to plastics and we’ll be able to clean up our oceans mostly but there will always be the micro plastics and the random water bottle floating around.

I think that eating fish that have ate the microplastics will put the microplastics into our system and it could make people sick if they eat fish all the time and especially the fish that swim with their mouths open. -Elena Appel
ReplyDeleteI believe we will be able to reverse all the plastic in the ocean but it will take some time. There are things being invented that can consume and get rid of the ocean plastic.

I found it interesting that paper straws emit more carbon dioxide but are actually better for the environment because it breaks down in water.

I think encouraging companies to stop using plastic bags and straws could help a lot. -Izzy Moss
ReplyDeleteI believe that we will not be able to reverse our actions and it will be too late, before we pull a wall-e like escape and leave the earth.

DeletePersonally, I don't think oceans could ever become all plastic. If oceans were all plastic, then where would all of the water go? Plus, I know plastic isn't coolio boolio, but I don't ever see that happening due to the vastness of the oceans. The oceans are so huge that if we even managed to fill the oceans with plastic waste, we'd probably be out of materials to make more plastic. There is more ocean than there is land on the planet and it isn't realistic to even suggest that the oceans would become all plastic. Plastic isn't Blip Blop at all, but I don't see plastic becoming a problem this significant. There are many other sources of waste we should probably be even more concerned about.

Outstanding point! I completely agree.
DeleteYeah i believe it could effect the nutrition of the food we intake- aslam
ReplyDeleteOne thing to encourage large companies to stop using plastic would be to provide tax incentives for the companies.
ReplyDelete-Corey Ables
what do you think could stop this. my solution would be to tax plastic to the same price as a decomeposable product.

DeleteI think we are trying to do things now to take out big pieces of plastic before they start to break down and it'll overall help the micro plastic % go down. I also think that we are consuming the micro-plastic when we consume fish and other sea animals.

I think we should definitely be pushing for fixes to this before it becomes a big problem, and we can always find ways to clean it up, but it won't matter if more is just dumped into the waters anyways. Alternatives to plastic need to be made and enforced or else we aren't going to fix this.

I think that there are steps we can take to lessen the amount of plastic that's put into the ocean like putting a limit on how much plastic is used in products or start using a more environmental friendly alternative for plastic. But other than cleaning up the more visible pieces of plastic there will always be plastic in the water.

i think we ca really do something for help to switching the plastic, for examples increase the price, use glass or paper instead. -giorgia
ReplyDeleteI think that their is so many harmful plastics and trash in the oceans and I know that their are many efforts in order to prevent the spread of plastics but their is not enough. The amount of plastics in our oceans is absurd but i do not think that the oceans will become all plastic due to the efforts to fix the problem as well as the new discovery's allow us to combat this problem more
ReplyDeleteI think this could be a really big problem because if the small fish are eating the microplastics than the medium and large fish will then eat the small fish and the whole food chain will be affected. Also, do you know how the plastic effect the fish?-Teagan Dunne
ReplyDeleteI feel like this could be a bigger problem than just with ocean life, it can also affect us. People swim in the ocean, Go fishing and we also get majority of our water from oceans all over. Eventually the small pieces of plastic is going to build up and cause more issues.

DeleteYes, I do think that this could eventually affect our health, because if fish are being contaminated and we are eating fish, then it probably isn't very good for us either.

ReplyDeleteI think this could definitely affect us if we eat fish. If there are traces of plastic in fish and it get to us, it will affect us because it isn’t good for us and doesn’t belong in us
I think that Aquatic Animals that we eat could be even harming us because of the fact that they could have micro plastics that we are digesting
ReplyDeleteSebastian
the micro plastics in the ocean are casusing extreame damage to the fish and their homes, the fish are currently dying by the loads and it seems that weird things showing up inside of fish is more common now.

ReplyDeleteI think this will affect us because we eat fish and the fish eat plastic which means we eat plastic which could be detrimental to our health.
Unfortunately, i believe that there is so much contamination in our oceans that it will be nearly impossible to clean them so they are restored to safe levels of toxins. Small and even microscopic plastic partials are easily ingested by all living sea creatures. This also impacts humans because we largely depend on fish and sea food to feed a large pertain of the planet. I would be some what optimistic that we could have an impact on improving this problem if we were serious as a society about eliminating the production and use of plastic immediately . However it is extremely dis heartening when our own president bows out of the Paris Accord.
