Ice Caps Melting by Teagan Dunne

Ice Caps Melting by Teagan Dunne

Ice caps are very important to our earth, they reflect excess heat back into space and keep the planet cooler. Today, only 10% of our earth is covered in ice and 90% is in Antarctica and the remaining 20% is in located in the Greenland ice cap. The melting of this ice slows the oceans currents and also makes the ocean rise slowly which could be very dangerous if the trend keeps up. There are two types of ice that are dangerous if they melt in rapid ways. These two ices are called sea ice and glacier Ice. The difference between them is that sea ice is ice that floats in the oceans and glacier ice are huge mountains of ice that can melt and run off into the ocean. Since the industrial area the glaciers have rapidly been melting and falling into the ocean. I good quote I found was “Even if we significantly curb emissions in the coming decades, more than a third of the world’s remaining glaciers will melt before the year 2100. When it comes to sea ice, 95% of the oldest and thickest ice in the Arctic is already gone”. This is a rising problem in our world today because when the ice melts it affects the oceans currents which directly affects weather patterns around the world, industries relying on fish will be affected as warmer water changes where and when fish bread, coastal communities will continue to face flooding and more storms will happen, and animals habits and lives will also be affected heavily.

Questions:

What ways could we slow this process

What Major Cities/Countries do you think will be affected the most

What specific way could the ice caps melting affect an animal's life(polar bear)

  1. The cities that would be affected the most would be coastal cities because rising ocean levels could flood part or all of the cities.

  2. We can slow this process by using less fossil fuels and using other transportation.

  3. I believe that the areas that would be most affected by melting ice caps is coastal areas. This is because as the water rises they will be the first ones to get hit by it.

  4. The ice caps melting could effect the polar bears because their habitat is basically made of ice. With their habitat being lost their populations decrease which causes other animals (their prey) populations to increase. Without the polar bears as a natural predator to control their numbers an imbalance happens in the environment.

  5. By the ice caps melting it can pretty much destroy the food chain and eventually the worlds population. but I feel like this issue isn't being taken as seriously as it should, cause people could feel like it only affects arctic life instead of us.

  6. This could affect the polar bears because the ice to them, is how dirt is to us. If the ice melts into the water, then they will be left with nothing. It is very upsetting to think of how the polar bears may not have a home in 10 years. - Gracey Bell

  7. It is scary to think that over our lifetime, sea levels could rise as to where some people in coastal areas could have to relocate, due to water damage and increased damage by storms. It's also concerning how arctic animals could be affected and how this could change our ecosystem.

  8. The ice caps melting but polar bears and other animals at risk because they will either die or have to move away and find somewhere else to live, however they have such a specific environment it could have a negative effect on them as well as their pray and what pray on them. -Elena Appel

  9. I think the cities that will be most affected by this are coastal cities because the rising ocean levels destroy those cities frst, before the inland cities.

  10. I think cities like venice and such that are mostly on water will be really screwed

  11. I think cities that would be most affected are cities that will most affected are cities that are directing on the coast line such as Los Angeles and New York because the sea rise caused by the ice caps melting will directly flood those cities on the coast lines. -Cal Reynolds

  12. I belive that cities like venice and amsterdan who have very low coast lines, and almost built there city around thesebodies of water will be affected most significantly also to mention the gulf of mexico and basically the whole east coast of the united states is built near or directly on water.- Adam

  13. We can slow the process of the ice caps melting by being more environment friendly in many different ways but the best way is to use less fossil fuels. The areas that'll be effected the most are the places near areas of water. -Gabby Abowitz

  14. Yes it is very scary to think about how much evidence scientists have on ice caps melting and sea level rising, although I do not think this will affect our generation because we do know it is happening but it is still a pretty slow proccess.

  15. ice caps melting, isnt a good thing to here, its almost uncorntrolla able by this point but i just learned that it dosent really matter as long as ice from land top areas dont slide into the sea -drew

I think cities that will be affected will be cities that are along the coast line

  17. As Green house effects us more, sea levels will start to rise due to the icee caps melting which 10% of the world is covered in ice.

  18. the ice caps melting is a huge deal for all of the wildlife in the artic, because of the decrease in habitat the bears do not have as much hunting ground causing them to starve and die

  19. The effects that the melting ice caps could have on the lives of animals like polar bears are obviously significant. Having a small place to live could be a limiting factor in a population and since the environment that the polar bears live on is shrinking, this means that the population of the polar bears will consistently get smaller and smaller. PLUS, like i said before with the size of the environment being a limiting factor, the smaller space to live could also lead to competition within the species. I mean, this could mean there is an inevitable Polar Bear WAR in the near future. Let's just hope that the Polar Bears are good diplomats and can prevent such a conflict, or else this could have a much larger impact than we could have ever imagined.
