How Music Affects Our Emotions and Body
by Lizzy Raupp
This article explores the effect that music has on our emotions. It explains that listening to music affects us on a chemical level, and that listening to music that we like releases dopamine and adrenaline. Dopamine is the hormone that makes us feel happy, like eating something we like or hugging our friends. The adrenaline released can be used to focus more on the task at hand. The release of dopamine and adrenaline stays with us even after the song ends, leaving us happy. Music can be used positively to cope with depression or as a reward for doing something well. Music therapy is a growing field, using music to help patients work through mental and emotional difficulties.
