Obesity in Rats Parallel to Obesity in Humans

By: Tori Favazza

Scientists have found that mice have a genetic defect that impacts immune cells. These immune problems are connected to changes in the gut microbiome. Bacteria and microbes are bacteria living in the intestines. To alter this mix of bacteria could result in an increased amount of fat getting absorbed from the food. These findings have been studied by scientists and they have found a parallel to obesity in people. The microbe mix in the intestines of people with type 2 diabetes is unusual, along with some immune system deficiencies. Research has shown that obese mice have fewer types of gut microbes compared to normal mice, and this has been seen in humans as well. Science’s have known that gut microbes and diet have impacted body weight, but new studies show that the immune system plays a huge role in that also. One pressing question on scientists now is: why is the microbiome responsible for how much fat the gut absorbs?

Do you know someone with type 2 diabetes?

How do they deal with their diabetes on a daily basis?

Do you think we can solve the obesity problem in the United States?

  5. Because rats have this genetic defect they have extra fat in their bodies which causes them to gain weight. It can also be found in humans, which scientists can look into and maybe help solve some weight gain issues. -Lilly Pearson
