Since 1986, the International Whaling Commision has put a hold commercial whaling and little to no countries have been hunting whales due to the dwindling population. However, at the end of this past year, Japan decided to quit the IWC and object their ban. Joining Norway and Iceland, Japan says they will stay within Japanese waters and economic zones. By using a loophole and claiming they are hunting for scientific research, they are allowed to hunt a certain number However, Japan received internationally shame from politicians from the UK, Greenpeace, and Australian Marine Conservation Society since Japan claims the populations have gone back up since the 1908s, but many refute that. Whales are hunted for meat, oil, and blubber and many see Japan’s decision as destructive to the marine ecosystem.

Why is it a problem if whales are hunted?
What effect will commercial whale hunting have on the environment?
What other animals are exploited for commercial hunting?
Do you agree with the other countries that are outraged?

ReplyDeletesomething needs to be done because it doesn't take long for an animal to become extinct and every animal is important to any food chain - lexi
ReplyDeleteWell it is goodthing that japan has recently stopped hunting whales cause they clean our seas, and oceans. But ithink every country should do this. Cause it is brutal. - Anushka R
ReplyDeleteIf whales start to become fished more in anywhere they could start to become extinct.
ReplyDeleteWhales could start to become extinct, so they need to be protected. -Klarissa
ReplyDeleteIf Whales became extinct how bad would the ocean suffer?-Cali
ReplyDeleteI know elephants are exploited for they're tusks to go off of your question.

Even if theyre using these whales for research it isnt worth their population declining
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, they may be lying about research and they are killing the population either way.
DeleteIf whales are hunted it would mess up the oceans ecosystem because whales eat other fish.

I don't think that it is appropriate to kill whales. Its just another animal on our list being added to a slowing going away population -ogechi
ReplyDeleteif whales became extinct the ocean would struggle to survive because the food chain would be messed up -triston
ReplyDeleteI don't think there should even be a way to opt out of the halt on whale hunting. - Myori
ReplyDeleteI think whales were very useful back in the day, but now there is a lot of alternatives we can use. -Calvin
