Boyan Slat, a 24 year old from the Netherlands, had an idea in order to clean up the Pacific ocean. They called this project, The Ocean Cleanup. The Ocean cleanup is an operation hoping to remove a majority, to be specific 1.8 trillion pieces, of plastic from the ocean. This contraption is made of a ten foot long net that is dragged through a water. It works like this, the Ocean Cleanup, “Fitted with solar power lights, cameras, sensors and satellite antennas, will communicate its position at all times, allowing a support vessel to fish out the collected plastic every few months and transport it to dry land where it will be recycled.”

Even though this idea seems beneficial, there are a few concerns with the system. Due to the fact that it is a net, people thought this would pose a threat to the fish in the ocean. Slat responded to these concerns by informing people that fish would be able to swim under to escape the contraption. Another concern people had was the fact that the net was only ten feet deep, meaning it was basically only scraping the surface of a whole ocean polluted with plastic among other trash. In my opinion, I believe that the Ocean Cleanup project would be beneficial. In the end it isn't hurting anything, and although it can't get all of the trash, it is helping remove a portion of it.

Do you think that this is beneficial?

Why do you think this may not work?

Do you think this will affect ocean life?

  1. our ocean needs lofts of help and us keeping it clean should be our first concern

  2. Cleaning oceans should be a huge priority. There are many animals dying because of the waste in the ocean. Even contributing a little bit could help the world tremendously.

  3. The ocean clean up is a great way to clean our oceans and help the aquatic life. There are too many animals dying due to lack of humans not caring about where they put their trash.

  5. I think that this is a good idea but I'm still not sure about the fish being able to escape. If it doesn't hurt to try, then I say go for it.-Olamide Ayeni

  6. I think this is an interesting project but there are a lot of questions about its validity. How would we know that this would not affect ocean life? How does Slat plan to keep this project going? I think it's a good idea but it's flawed.

  7. I wondrer how long till this is will be effective in the ocean. Due to it being not that large, I also wonder how many will be created in the future if this is successful

  8. Me personally, i think the ocean clean up would be a great way to keep the animals safe. When the ocean are is dirty the animals start to eat on it and could potentially die.

  9. We need the ocean, it doesn't need people. When people realize that then we can start a road to recovery
