Water pollution by Gavin Fair

Each year there are large amounts of plastic waste mixed with random waste pushed into the ocean killing millions of species each year and the number of waste isn't decreasing.

Roughly about 12 million tons of waste is put into the ocean such as cups, straws, bags and bottles that can cover beaches and foul nearshore waters. The rest, including the lint from synthetic clothing and bits of tires ground off into the gutters. The size of these massive piles of trash can get up to double the size of Texas.

Over time the plastic lost in the ocean never decomposes but breaks down into microplastic which can absorb into marine food supply which can harm whatever consumes it.There's even evidence that when fish eat the tiny pieces of plastic, the chemicals in the plastic can affect their health. Some experts worry this could potentially harm people who eat the fish. This material is carried by global currents into one of the five “garbage gyres," vast areas of ocean, sometimes hundreds of miles across, where slowly swirling currents gradually concentrate it into waters infected with a “smog” of micro plastic amid larger pieces and discarded nets, buoys and other industrial fishing gear. When the marine life come into contact with the islands of trash eat the inedible pieces of plastic causing them to die of starvation and not getting the nutrients they need

What can we do to stop trash from getting in the ocean?

What could we do to get the pollution out of the ocean for good?

How does it affect the animals?

  1. 12 million tons of waste are in the ocean when it rains the water picks up anything that’s with it and brings it into the water. Maggie

  2. water pollution is more of a problem than just polluting the water and killing animals in the ocean, we're killing animals that don't even live in the ocean

  3. I think it's funny how small pieces of trash like straws end up being the ones that cause the most trouble.

  4. if this trash is ending up in the ocean, why aren't we moving it in more efficient ways so that it doesnt end up in the ocean - Lindsay Dehn

  5. As a society, I believe we need to work on managing our trash better. Just by not littering or securing your trash bags when you throw your trash out, could help reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the ocean.

  6. People are killing wildlife without even caring that they are making our world a bad place. We need to work on not polluting the waters with trash and plastic.

  9. Since whales are filter feeders, I am guessing they are worse off when it comes to plastic in oceans. There are a lot of efforts to remove plastic from oceans but micro plastics still pose a threat.
