Waste Problems by Maggie Kilcullin

One major problem is there is to much waste and we don't know what to do with it. America alone is responsible for the producing about 220 million tons of waste annually. Americans generate nearly 260 million tons of municipal solid waste. This is about 2.1 kg per person each day.Another problem is landfills. Most landfills lack proper on site waste management which contributes to additional threats to the environment. In the long term, landfills leak and pollute groundwater and other neighboring environmental habitats making waste management very difficult. They also give off potentially unsafe gases.
Another big problem is most of the waste is toxic. On a daily basis industries produce toxic products that end up getting thrown away after it is used. Most of the products contain hazardous and health threatening chemicals. This is very serious and we need to do something about it.
How do we cut down on the waste we produce?

ReplyDeleteMy family tries to reduce our waste by composting and recycling as often as we can. If everyone did this, we could reduce waste by a lot.

I believe that there are many things we individually can be doing to cut down on trash production. Instead of using ziploc bags to hold our food, we should use reusable containers. Instead of plastic water bottles, we should use reusable water bottles. When you eat out, try not to use a plastic lid or straw. By doing these simple things, we may be able to at least impact the trash production a little bit.
