Scientists Tried Taming Hurricanes by Nik Meeks

In the 1960’s scientists tried to tame hurricanes by injecting clouds with ice-forming silver iodide. The experiment failed but other methods were suggested by meteorologists. They came up with a method of dispersing sulfate aerosols into the stratosphere. Unfortunately this method was not put to use as the project was shut down in 1983. Although they did not succeed in taming hurricanes they discovered new ways on how to predict them.

What are some new ways that we could predict hurricanes?

Is there any possibility in stopping hurricanes before they happen?

How can we stop the hurricanes energy source?

  5. It is a great idea to try and prevent or stop hurricanes due to their harmful and destructive nature, but adding chemicals to the atmosphere may lead to many more underlying dangers to the environment.

  6. This is a really cool topic. Maybe the damage done by hurricanes can be prevented by having better evacuation plans in the case of a hurricane. Global warming causes more severe weather, so if we reduced pollution it would decrease the intensity of hurricanes.

  7. I feel like messing with the storms can cause bigger problems then just letting them run their natural route, they are way too big and strong to effect them and not effect something else while doing it.

  11. By utilizing the power of sonar and satellite image, scientists can begin to predict the forming of hurricanes, as well as a sudden shift in weather patterns.

Hurricanes by design can't simply be stopped. The same way we can stop wind and rain, which is basically what a hurricane is comprised of. We can, however, try to reverse the effects that make hurricanes more common, and more violent. Hurricanes thrive off of warm water, and warm air meeting. By not providing this fuel essential, we can lessen hurricane effects

  12. You can never change something in nature without effecting something else. This is something that has to be taken in to account because the effects could be even worse than the problem you are solving.
