  1. The Red tide and Blue-green tide algae bloom are caused by two different organisms. The harmful species is the phytoplankton which is a natural phenomenon. The Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic which causes the tide to appear in a blue-green color. One of the causes of this bloom is that the algae receive high nutrients from surface/ stormy water runoff. -Nik

  2. the algae bloom is very toxic. it originated florida. Then there is the red tide which is a harmful species because it releases toxins. The blue green algae make its own food using sunlight which is essential to the everglades. it is almost like algae on steriods. Blue green algae has high nutrients which runs of surface water.

Where did the red tide come from?
How harmful can the red tide be if there is too much of it?

  3. Florida has recently experienced unusual algae blooms- the red tide and the blue green algae bloom. These have killed 260 tons in ocean life. The red tide algae produce microcystin, which is a toxin. They bloom on the ocean floor and are moved to the surface and closer to the shore by currents and wind. The blue green blooms are caused by cyanobacteria, which are photosynthetic. The blue green bloom has been going on for longer than usual. Runoff water is picking up manure and other nitrogen and phosphorous rich substances, which stimulate algae growth. The red tide has been shifting to the rainy season, which increases its length. People believe that governments at different levels and citizens are responsible for factors that increase the potency of these blooms.

Do you think this is a result of global warming?
    How would you fix this?

  4. The Florida algae bloom is caused by a mix of red tides and blue green tides. Red tides are phytoplankton that have been brought to shore and are releasing toxic gases. While phytoplankton are good for us, as they release 70% of our oxygen, they can be harmful when to close to shore. The blue green tides are cyanobacteria that are also beneficial, but again harmful when there are too many or the wrong kind, the wrong kind being the ones that release toxins. All of this is happening because of rain and surface water runoff. This runoff picks up nutrients, like fertilizer, and brings it into the ocean where the cyanobacteria and phytoplankton feed off of it, increasing their numbers tremendously.

These algae blooms are not uncommon. In fact, they usually happen once a year. But this particular bloom has been occurring since November, effecting the ocean life tremendously. Over 200 tons of fish have died in response to this bloom. Sea turtles, dolphins, and even a whale shark have washed up dead on the shore. This is a significant issue for the people in Florida as well as it is affecting us here in St. Louis.

How could this be affecting us in St. Louis?
What are ways to prevent future algae blooms from being this bad?

  5. In Florida for almost a year now there has been harmful amount of species such as Phytoplankton and Cyanobacteria. These are types of microorganisms that make up 75% of our oxygen . The reason this is happening is due to the strong tides coming in which is bringing it closer to the shore. Some reasons this is happening is due to urbanization and dog poop which is actually feeding the cynobacteria. This is extremely harmful for marine life and endangering many species and respiratory problems in people.

  6. There has been a wave of algae problems in the ocean killing thousands of fish on the coast of Florida. There is the red tide and the blue green bacteria bloom. The species that is wiping out fish in Florida, is phytoplankton it's actually good for us we get 70% of our oxygen, but whats killing the fish is when the current brings phytoplankton up to the surface and the wind brings them in closer to the shore which is what is killing all these fish.
The other problem that surfaced before the red tide came up was the same problem but a different bacteria called cyanobacteria. It was called the blue green bacteria bloom.

  7. Humans need algae because it makes %70 of the oxygen we need to breath. At the same time the algae that is producing the oxygen that we need is also killing a bunch of marine life.
I believe that we should try to balance out the algae in the ocean, and try to prevent the algae that is harmful to the environment from blooming as much and as often. One way we can prevent too much algae from entering the ocean is by installing filter at the end of main runoff water trails that lead to the ocean so there will still be algae in the water just not a harmful amount.

Q1: What other ways can we prevent harmful amounts of algae from entering the ocean?
Q2: Do you think this problem should be a main concern for people or are there more concerning problems that can be solved?

  10. The government in Florida were making the water overflow in rivers causing all the water to bring the fertilizers with them into the ocean. The fertilizers are getting consumed by the alga making them grow faster and have more chemicals in them. As the alga also known as the red tide gets taken closer to the shore by the waves and a lot of fish and other endangered sea creatures consume them and die. those alga are a harmful species of phytoplankton .

If the fertilizers would be made differently and more safer would that help the situation?

what endangered animals suffered from this situation the most?

  11. On the coast of Florida, something called a "Red Tide" is actively effecting the ecosystem of the gulf, as well as the people who live on it. Since November of last year, about 267 tons of life have washed ashore, dead. Approximately $1 million have been spent in making restorations and bringing back tourism, which is at a low. This Red Tide is exacerbated by highly nutritious run-off water, that picks up fertilizer and even animal feces.

Ride tide is a blooming of a harmful Phytoplankton (A species which generates about 70% of our oxygen), which have been uprooted by currents, and brought to shore by winds. This is a bad thing so to say, as these phytoplankton are actively producing toxins which are killing marine life, and can actually attach themselves to sea salt particles, and carry inland, causing a cough in a healthy person, and serious problems for people with existing respiratory issues.

  12. - Do we have systems developed for the problem of runoff rainwater from cities into our natural water?
    - Are there any solutions that can kill the algae? If not, is somebody working on one?
    - How do we approach the community with ways they can help this problem? Does somebody have a plan of action for spreading the word about participation? Does anybody actually know how the community can help solve this problem?
    - Where’s the million dollars going???

The residents of several counties off the coastline of Florida are complaining to officials about the 267 tons of marine life, including a 21-foot whale shark, washing up dead due to a phenomenon called a Red Tide. The preferred scientific term for a Red Tide is a ‘harmful algal bloom’ and that’s exactly what it is, but there’s a lot more that goes into this algae problem than the common civilian can complain about. Not only has the state already poured one million dollars into the cleanup of this bloom since October, but it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon... as the normal time period for Red Tides has shifted into the rainy season (which is a direct cause for the bloom sticking around so long). Scientists better hurry with a solution to kill this stuff, the residents of Florida have had enough state of emergencies for this year!
